Tips for Teachers Planning School Field Trips for Students with Disabilities

12/31/2022

Field trips can be a great way for students to learn outside of the classroom and experience new things. However, when planning a field trip with students who have disabilities, it's important to take extra steps to ensure that the trip is accessible and enjoyable for all students. Here are some tips for teachers planning a field trip with students who have disabilities:
  1. Involve the students in the planning process: Involve the students who have disabilities in the planning process as much as possible. This will not only help you understand their specific needs, but it will also give them a sense of ownership and inclusion in the trip.
  2. Communicate with the venue: Reach out to the venue where the field trip will take place and let them know about the students' disabilities. This will allow the venue to make any necessary accommodations, such as providing wheelchair ramps or other assistive devices.
  3. Make a plan for communication: If you have students who are nonverbal or have difficulty communicating, make a plan for how they can communicate their needs during the field trip. This could include bringing along a communication board or device, or having a designated adult available to assist with communication.
  4. Consider the physical layout of the venue: Consider the physical layout of the venue and make sure it is accessible for all students. This may include making sure there are wheelchair ramps or elevators, or ensuring that there is enough space for students to move around comfortably.
  5. Prepare for emergencies: It's important to have a plan in place in case of emergencies. Make sure you have contact information for each student's caregivers, as well as any necessary medical information. It's also a good idea to bring along any necessary medical equipment or medications.
By following these tips, teachers can plan a field trip that is enjoyable and accessible for all students, including those with disabilities.
